Course Description for Veterinarians:
This 2-day course consists of 6 hours of lecture and 10 hours of hands on lab. The first day is devoted to the oral exam, regional anesthesia, radiograph acquisition, interpretation, and treatment planning. After the first day, attendees will be able to complete a comprehensive oral exam, understanding clues present in the oral exam that will aid in treatment planning. Attendees will review critical periodontal equipment and how to perform basic periodontal treatments such as ultrasonic and hand supragingival scaling, closed and open root planing, and appropriate use of perioceutics. Local and regional anesthesia will also be covered on the first day, including infraorbital, inferior alveolar and mental nerve blocks and their administration. Finally, on the first day, radiograph acquisition and interpretation will be discussed and practiced. After the first day, the attendee will be able to obtain full mouth radiographs of the dog and interpret common normal variations and periodontal pathology.
On the second day, the technicians and doctors will be split into separate groups. The technician track will focus on equipment maintenance, equipment sharpening and the technician role in dentistry.
The second day for veterinarians will be devoted to extractions. Tips to improve extraction techniques will be discussed and practiced, and common complications will be discussed and practiced.
