Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive approach to abdomen for organ biopsy, diagnostic techniques, and surgical procedures. The first day of the course includes lectures on instrumentation, basic techniques and procedures to be performed in the laboratory. Endoscopic skills begin with a session using endoscopic trainers, followed by a hands-on session using cadavers to develop basic laparoscopic skills. The second day participants will perform laparoscopy on cadavers. Participants will learn basic approaches and tissue manipulation. Laparoscopic techniques include tissue biopsy (liver, pancreas, and kidney), cholecystocentesis and basic laparoscopic-assisted techniques including, intestinal biopsy, gastropexy, and ovariectomy. This course is intended for those having minimal or no experience with laparoscopy. The laboratory is limited in size to three people per animal. After this course participants are eligible for the laparoscopic ovariectomy and advanced surgical laparoscopy courses.
