Laparoscopic-Assisted Gastropexy

Course Description
Laparoscopic assisted gastropexy is indicated for large breed dogs at risk for gastric dilatation volvulus. This course is recommended for general practitioners with experience with laparoscopy. During this course, the participants will have access to online materials to learn about the technique before coming to CSU/TMI. One lecture in person will be conducted the afternoon before the lab for discussion and Q&A session with the instructors. A lab will then be performed to complete two laparoscopic assisted gastropexies in two canine cadavers.During this lab a demonstration will be performed by the instructors. Two laparoscopic assisted gastropexies will then be completed in two live dogs from a rescue operation. The course will be concluded with another Q&A session with the instructors.

1 – p.m. – Light lunch and welcome
1:30 pm – Lecture and Q&A session
2 p.m. – Laboratory 1: Laparoscopic-assisted gastropexy (cadavers)
5 p.m.- End of day
Day Two
7:30 a.m. – Breakfast
8 a.m. – Surgery- Laparoscopic-assisted gastropexy (live recovery dogs)
12 p.m. – Lunch
12:30 p.m. – Surgery (continued) – Laparoscopic-assisted gastropexy (live recovery dogs)
6 p.m. – Conclusion

Dr. Eric Monnet
DVM, PhD, DACVS, DECVS, Professor, Colorado State University
Dr. Eric Monnet graduated from veterinary school in Maisons Alfort, France in 1985. He worked for four years in a Paris private practice performing small animal medicine and surgery. In 1994, Dr. Monnet completed a small animal surgery residency at Colorado State University and concurrently finished a Master of Sciences degree. In 1997, Dr. Monnet received his PhD in Clinical Sciences studying cardiac efficiency in dogs. In 2003, he became a fellow of the American Heart Association. In 2017, he became a founding fellow of the ACVS MIS Small Animal fellowship.
Dr Monnet is currently a professor in small animal surgery (General Surgery at Colorado State University. He has authored more than 100 articles and 25 chapters in various surgical textbooks. Dr. Monnet was the founding president in 2001-2003 of the Society for Veterinary Soft Tissue Surgery and in 2002-2004 of the Veterinary Endoscopy Society. He is the editor of the textbook: “Disease Mechanisms in Small Animal Surgery” (3rd edition). He is also the editor of the textbook “Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery” (1st edition), the textbook “Small Animal Thoracic Surgery” (2nd edition), and the textbook “Gastrointestinal Surgical Techniques” (1st edition).

Sarah Marvel
MS, DVM, DACVS-SA, ACVS Fellow, Surgical Oncology, ACVS Fellow Candidate MIS (Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery), Clinical Instructor, Colorado State University
Dr. Marvel received her undergraduate degree from Harvard University and then went on to obtain her DVM from the University of Wisconsin in 2009. She completed a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Colorado State University. She stayed at Colorado State University and completed a residency in small animal surgery in 2013. Following her surgical residency she completed a fellowship in Surgical Oncology at the Flint Animal Cancer Center at Colorado State University. She achieved board certification from the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (DACVS-SA) in 2014. She joined the General Surgery department as a Clinical Instructor at Colorado State University in 2016. She is currently completing a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery (small animal soft tissue surgery).

If a course is canceled for any reason, we are not responsible for any charges related to travel.
Refunds are available for cancellations made 35 days prior to the beginning of the course. Cancellations less than 35 days before a course are nonrefundable but may be partially transferrable to a future course.
